The cottage

Foxhill House stands on its own in Herefordshire, twenty miles south of the Kyre cottages and reached down a drive lined with daisies and wildflowers. It is small, stone-built, and Georgian across its south-facing front, which means the light works its way through the rooms for most of the day. There are two bedrooms — one king-size, one double — and two bathrooms, and you take the whole house rather than a part of it. Check-in is your own: the keys are in a key safe, so it does not matter what time the motorway lets you go. What is in front of the house is the argument for it — old countryside nobody has tidied up, and enough wildlife in it to keep anyone at the window.
