The cottage

Queen Victoria spoke affectionately of nearby Tenbury Wells as “my little town in the orchard”, and this northern pocket of Worcestershire still overflows with hops and cider apple trees. The cottage steals its name from the backdrop of ancient undisturbed woodland behind it. Winding your way up the track to this converted stable, you catch glimpses of the Teme and Kyre valleys. Generous windows flood the rooms with light, which bounces off polished elm floorboards; a wood-burner and an Aga keep things warm, the kitchen is handcrafted, and the views are long. Upstairs the bedrooms are brass-bedded and floral, tucked under the eaves, with a loo and basin up there and a bathroom with a roll top tub downstairs.

Children have the run of the grounds, and there is a secret treehouse complete with hammocks and a barbecue for midnight feasts.

Resting on the borders of three counties, this is prime walking country. Leading directly from the cottage is an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways, rich in wildlife: badgers, muntjac, woodpeckers and buzzards are regular visitors.
